Best Slippers For Wide Feet

In my lifetime I have found very few pairs of slippers that I actually like and fit me well. I have had such difficulty finding Best Slippers For Wide Feet that the only reason I start shopping for new ones is if my old ones start crumbling to dust and falling off my feet as I walk.

I’ve shopped in several places that claim to offer the best slippers for wide feet but, for some reason, they always seem to come up short on the men’s options front. Perhaps it’s simply my need for extra-wide slippers (or that I’m super picky) that makes it hard for me but I have grown determined to conquer this petulant problem.

If you don’t care about the criteria I used to make my decision, I understand. I wouldn’t care either except that it was necessary to find the best of the best! Here’s the short version: I wanted comfortably wide slippers that would last me for years without having to resort to a custom-made option.

So whether you need the best slippers for sore feet after a hard day or soothing slippers for painful feet due to a condition, or are simply a bum like me and want the best slippers for wide feet.

What Makes For A Durable And Comfortable Slipper?

If the average person had to describe “fat people shoes” they would probably come up with an image of all-white Velcro shoes from Walmart. Very few people seem to appreciate that big guy can wear classy dress shoes, heavy women can wear heels, both genders can wear nice running shoes, etc.

Now, needing extra wide slippers has nothing to do with me being fat. I sincerely think that, if you don’t own a pair of slippers, you’re probably doing things wrong. Having house shoes has a ton of advantages: it helps your real shoes last longer, they keep your feet warm and comfortable, they protect your feet on short jaunts to the mailbox, and they keep your carpet cleaner than wearing shoes in the house!

So now that we know we need a good slipper, we need to figure out what that even means. When I was younger, comfort was the main thing I looked for in slippers. That and I wanted to feel like a mountain man or native American when I wore them. Naturally, that leads me only to mocassins. However, as I’ve grown (older and heavier) my taste in slippers has become refined a bit and I’ve been able to differentiate some specific things that make certain types of slippers the best choice for me:

  1. Comfort: If you’re in the market for slippers, you’re probably not surprised to find comfort as the number one item on my list. If you have sore or painful feet the idea of getting your daily shoes off and slipping into slippers is something to look forward to. In my mind, comfortable slippers have padding, some sort of insulation (sherpa), and a non-rigid sole.
  2. Stay on Your Feet: Some people might want extra wide slides or flip-flops in the house but I prefer a slipper that stays on my feet.
  3. Warm but not sweaty: I want to be able to wear my slippers sans socks when the feeling hits me. So they can’t be overly warm or have sweat-inducing material inside.
  4. Non-Rigid Soles: Any wide slippers worth their salt will have a sole of some sort. I don’t need a full hard sole (or I’d just wear shoes) but I do want to be able to wear them outside to the mailbox without getting stabbed by a thorn.
  5. Long-Lasting: Even extra-wide slippers don’t fit quite right when I first get them. It typically takes me a month or two to fall in love with footwear so I need something that lasts more than a season or two.
  6. Don’t Look Too “old” or “hospitality”: I’m already wearing slippers, and not just normal slippers, extra-wide fluffy slippers. So the less I can look like I escaped from a hospital, the better.
  7. Width: Did I mention that I need extra-wide slippers? And, while I know not everyone has square feet, I purposely chose slippers that were capable of fitting a wide range of people.

Fit Your Feet: How To Measure Your Feet

Our feet are structurally unique and no 2 people can have identical foot sizes. But how do you determine that your foot is ‘wide’ and not ‘medium’, especially in these modern times when we do 80% of our shopping online? How do you know what size to ask for if you aren’t sure if the shoe design you want runs wide in its fitting? Let’s give you a few tips here to fit your feet.

  1. The best time to measure your feet is in the evening, to be sure that your feet are not swollen after long hours sitting, or affected by other things like heat, etc.
  2. You will need to measure your longer foot; if you don’t know which foot is longer, then measure both of your feet.
  3. If you aren’t steady enough to do it, ask someone to help you with this activity.
  4. Make sure that your entire foot is flat on the paper before tracing the outline.
  5. Stand on a piece of paper and mark the heel and longest toe with a vertical pen. This measure gives you the length of your foot.
  6. Use a ruler to determine the length in cm. Most tables of foot measurements will have the units of foot length translated into all standard shoe sizes.
  7. To determine the width of your foot, you will need to measure the widest part of your foot, from side to side. To get this measure, you will need to outline your feet once again.
  8. Take the outermost point at the ball of your foot, beneath your big toe; mark this outermost point on the paper.
  9. Lift your foot off the paper. Draw a straight horizontal line across your foot, from the ball to a point just below your small toe joint. This represents the widest part of your foot.
  10. Use a ruler to determine this length in cm and write it down.

  1. Genetics: Some people are naturally born with wider feet. If you are born with flat feet, then the chances of growing wide feet are high.
  2. Age: As the age catches with you, the feet’ ligaments and tendons become lost, causing the feet to flatten and grow longer and more comprehensive.
  3. Pregnancy: Several pregnant women may have wide feet for a given period, which occurs as a result of the body getting swollen.
  4. Foot Deformities: Foot deformities are caused by many issues such as wearing small-sized shoes, and other problems like bunions may make the feet grow wide.

1. The Size

Ensure the slippers you choose is the right size; picking the wrong slipper size could be uncomfortable for the feet, therefore, forcing your feet inside the small size slippers may cause your toe to bind over each other and your heels to overlap.

Besides, it may also cause the feet to swell or form some corns on your toes, which is always painful and becomes uncomfortable to wear a shoe or slipper.

Therefore you should also consider slipper shoes with a wider base that fit your feet comfortably to avoid overlapping and binding your toes.

2. The Padding And Aeration

This should be prioritized because for most people with wide feet, their arch is almost flat, hence finding a slipper shoe that contours completely with the wide feet would be relieving since it helps in absorbing the pressure build-up on the arch, heels, ankle, lower back, hip and knees, and toes.

Besides, it would be best if you considered checking on the insole breathability and padding because they both pair to provide maximum comfort by absorbing weight pressure to reduce pressure build-up around the arch, ankle, heels, and toes while walking. The breathable insole keeps your feet sweat and odour-free.

3. The Sole

Consider picking a slipper with a sole made from high-quality materials and long-lasting since most men with wide feet have high density leading to faster wearing and tearing of the shoe. Also, choose the best slippers for wide feet that allow shock-absorption to prevent pain on the heels, ankles, and underneath the foot. Furthermore, also consider the base of the slipper for the toes to feet comfortably and naturally.

4. Adjustable Straps or Slip-on

Some people with wide find it uncomfortable wearing slippers with adjustable straps due to skin sensitivity or preference; thus, they opt for slip-on and vice versa.

5. The Material

The material used for making the upper lining and inner lining also determines its durability and comfort. Thus, it is good to consider slipper shoes made from leather or sued or strong fabrics that offer comfortable, long-lasting, and easy-to-maintaining advantages.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ).

How Do You Tell If You Have Wide Feet?

“A wide foot is when the width of the forefoot measures larger than what would fit into an average or ‘M’ size width shoe. This can happen as a result of ligaments and tendons that have become a little bit laxer over time,” Dr Sutera explains. “Gravity plus age, weight, and/ or pregnancy can make feet wider gradually. Feet with deformities such as bunions, Taylor bunions, and hammertoes also can make the width of feet wider than normal.”

What Is the Proper Way To Measure One’s Foot To Determine Your Shoe Size?

Dr Ashley Lee, DPM, a podiatrist at Northern Illinois Foot & Ankle Specialists, recommends using a Brannock device to correctly measure one’s foot. These devices are usually readily available in stores but you can also purchase one from retailers online like Amazon as well.
“If you do not have one, you can draw a line on a piece of paper, stand on the line, and mark where the longest toe is and where the back of the heel is, then measure the line,” Lee adds. “Regardless of how you measure your foot, always make sure you are standing and that you are measuring from the longest toe. The big toe is not always the longest; often the 2nd toe is longer.”

What Features Should A Shoe Have for Wide Feet?

“A mesh toe box accommodates bony prominences such as bunions more comfortably due to its ability to stretch,” explains Dr Sutera. “In regards to the shape of the toe box, one that looks like the shape of your foot is better. Put the shoe next to your foot and imagine what your toes would look like in the shoe. If they look like they are cramped, it’s not the right shape for you. Also, avoid shoes that have straps that cross right at your widest point (ie a bunion) as this can lead to blisters and irritation.”

Why are Some Feet Wider than Others?

Our feet are anatomically unique; no two people have the same physical foot structure or footprint. Some people have narrow feet, while others have wide feet, and still, others have thick feet (about the height from the floor to the upper part of the foot). For example, two ladies may have the same shoe size 7, but one could have a narrow foot, while the other lady has a wide one. If the two ladies try to fit size 7 Ballerina slippers, the one with a wide foot will struggle to fit into the regular ballerina slipper.

Why are some feet wider than others? Well, our feet differ just the same way our body shapes differ, and for more or less the same reasons. Let’s take a quick look at some of the influencing factors, just to get some background.

  • Natural or Genetically Wide Feet

Wide feet in a person may be natural or genetically adapted. This means you are born with wide feet, or it is a genetic trait in your family that you acquired.

  • Medical Conditions

Conditions such as pregnancy, diabetes, and arthritis amongst others may lead to changes in your feet’ structure so that they become physically wider. During pregnancy, the body releases hormones that cause ligaments to relax: so you are likely to go up a size, or end up with wider feet because of this.

Arthritis essentially causes inflammation of the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis usually starts in the small joints of the hands and feet and affects the joints symmetrically. This means that if you have rheumatoid arthritis in your feet, you are likely to experience inflammation and swelling in both feet at the same time, thereby affecting your footwear.

  • Accidents, Trauma, and Surgery

Trauma to the phalanges or musculoskeletal structure of your feet may alter the width of your feet. This is also the case where medical interventions like surgery on your feet become necessary, resulting in alteration of the structure of your foot or formation of scar tissue, leading to changes in your foot size.

  • Age

Our feet can gain up to half an inch in length as we grow older. But that’s not all: Feet tend to flatten out and get wider because the supporting tendons and ligaments tend to lose their elasticity. Menopause too is known to cause alterations in women’s feet, due to a decrease in estrogen levels. Osteoporosis that may arise due to loss of bone mass may lead to the development of hairline stress fractures, which may cause the bones of the feet to shift out of place, in a worst-case scenario.

What Features Make Women’s Slippers Comfortable for Wide Feet?

  • The shoes should have a wide toe box design to provide a comfortable fitting and prevent feet injuries
  • Should provide arch support
  • Provide stability when walking on different surfaces
  • Should have quality and comfortable material design
